Musings from a busy mama

Channel 2 News Story August 18, 2011

Our family was recently featured on the local news. For what? Food allergies, of course!

It all began when we were contacted by Texas Children’s Hospital’s PR department. Channel 2 news wanted to feature a food allergy family in response to a news story that food allergies are on the rise. Our allergist thought we would be good candidates since I’ve worked in the past to promote food allergy awareness. How could I pass up this opportunity to raise awareness?!

I spent the night before cleaning and cleaning! I wasn’t sure where they would want to film so I made sure the whole house was immaculate! Plus I had to get rid of some of my nervous energy. I always get nervous! I also talked to Miles and tried to prepare him for some of the questions that I thought would be asked. He is pretty articulate and loves to talk but he started to get nervous also! He was, however, really excited that he would be on TV. He liked the idea of other food allergy kids seeing him and knowing that other kids would see how he managed his food allergies.

The reporter and camera guy got there at 11 am, along with the PR person from Texas Children’s. Everyone was so wonderful! First they set up the camera and lights in our breakfast nook. That’s where I was interviewed. Then they wanted to film our pantry and they were asking about our different pans and utensils and how we have separate pans for allergy and non allergy foods. Then the camera guy went upstairs to film Miles playing legos in his room and washing his hands. Then back downstairs for Miles’ interview. Miles did great!

After the filming was over at our house we headed to the local grocery store. They wanted to film us walking in…

I gotta say, it was really awkward walking into the store that we always shop at with a camera crew. Lots of people were watching and pointing and asking questions. I realized at that point that I could never do a reality TV show!

After the grocery store, we were done! We had to wait a long week and a half for the story to finally air. I thought they did a great job with the story. Want to see the final result?

We had family and friends over the night that it aired and had a little viewing party. Miles was so proud of himself and I was also proud of him and Blake and Lance. It was really neat to see us all on TV!

I would LOVE to find a cure for food allergies. For Miles, for all kids. Because food allergies are so prevalent almost everyone knows someone who has food allergies. I support FAAN because the money that FAAN raises goes directly into research for a cure. That is my hope. That one day my son will not have to be afraid of food. Food allergies really do permeate into all aspects of life. I would love a world that my child didn’t feel left out when others are enjoying yummy food, or a world where he didn’t have to be afraid if someone washed their hands recently.

Please support us in FAAN’s Walk for Food Allergies. Walk with us. Donate. Help us find a cure.
